Simple Sourdough Old Fashioned Pretzels
These old fashioned sourdough pretzels are perfect for slow afternoons, weekend baking, or serving alongside soup for a cozy, from scratch meal.
Prep Time 45 minutes mins
- 1 Cup Sourdough Starter
- 1 Cup Warm Water
- 1 Tbsp Honey or Sugar
- 1 tsp Salt
- 3-3 1/2 Cups All- purpose flour- I always used unbleached
- 2 tbsp Melted Butter (or olive oil)
- 6 Cups Water
- 2 Tbsp Baking Soda
Mark the Dough- In a bowl, mis starter, water, honey, salt, and melted butter. Add flour gradually until a soft dough forms. Rest-Let the dough rest for 15-20 minutes (this relaxes the gluten and makes shaping easy). Shape-Divide dough into 8 pieces. Roll each into a rope and twist into a pretzel shape. Boil-Bring water to a boil and add baking soda. Boil each pretzel 30 seconds per side, then remove to parchment paper. Add salt if desired. Bake-Sprinkle with salt and bake at 425 for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown Serve-Brush with butter if desired and enjoy!
