Why We Love These

These old fashioned sourdough pretzels are soft on the inside, perfectly chewy on the outside, and full of that classic homemade flavor. Using fermented sourdough not only adds depth of flavor, but also makes them easier to digest than regular pretzels. They’re simple, comforting, and made with ingredients you likely already have on hand. The kind of recipe you will want to come back to again and again.

Prep Time 45 minutes mins
Servings 8

Equipment

  • 1 Pan
  • Parchment Paper

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Sourdough Starter
  • 1 Cup Warm Water
  • 1 Tbsp Honey or Sugar
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3-3 1/2 Cups All- purpose flour- I always used unbleached
  • 2 tbsp Melted Butter (or olive oil)
  • 6 Cups Water
  • 2 Tbsp Baking Soda

Instructions

  • Mark the Dough-
In a bowl, mis starter, water, honey, salt, and melted butter. Add flour gradually until a soft dough forms.
  • Rest-
Let the dough rest for 15-20 minutes (this relaxes the gluten and makes shaping easy).
  • Shape-
Divide dough into 8 pieces. Roll each into a rope and twist into a pretzel shape.
  • Boil-
Bring water to a boil and add baking soda. Boil each pretzel 30 seconds per side, then remove to parchment paper. Add salt if desired.
  • Bake-
Sprinkle with salt and bake at 425 for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown
  • Serve-
Brush with butter if desired and enjoy!
